Foundation Engineering Services

Performance You Can Count On—Because We Do the Work.

You are here:

We design systems that match structural loads to actual soil conditions. Whether it’s the deep foundations for the Fresno Southeast Surface Water Treatment Facility or the heavy industrial slabs for Anaergia’s Rialto Bioenergy Facility, we ensure stability in California’s most challenging seismic and soil environments.

How We Deliver Value

We design foundation systems that transfer structural loads safely and efficiently, accounting for the specific soil and groundwater conditions at each site. At the Northwest Bakersfield Water Treatment Plant, we had to design foundations for new clarifiers and basins on a site already congested with existing infrastructure.

Evaluating Subsurface Conditions

Foundation design starts with understanding what’s in the ground. We review geotechnical investigations, analyze soil boring data, and assess how subsurface conditions will affect foundation performance.

For the City of Bakersfield TCP Mitigation, we had to assess conditions across 34 different well sites, adapting foundation designs for GAC vessels to varying local soil profiles.

Matching Foundation Type to Project Demands

Not every structure needs the same foundation approach. For the Silver Lake Reservoir, the engineering challenge was immense: a 110-million-gallon underground structure that required robust foundation design to support massive hydraulic loads and the weight of a public park above it.

We evaluate structural loads, soil characteristics, and construction constraints to recommend foundation systems that balance performance, cost, and constructability. The right foundation type makes installation straightforward and long-term performance predictable.

Designing for Settlement and Movement

Foundations that meet bearing capacity requirements can still fail if settlement isn’t addressed. We analyze total and differential settlement potential, designing foundations that keep movement within acceptable limits for the structure above. For sites with challenging soils—compressible clays, loose fills, or variable conditions—we develop solutions that control settlement or accommodate it without causing structural distress.

Accounting for Construction Realities

We consider excavation depths, dewatering requirements, equipment access, and installation tolerances when developing foundation plans. Details like reinforcement congestion, concrete placement logistics, and inspection access all affect whether construction proceeds smoothly. Our foundation engineering reflects practical experience with how these systems actually get built.

Foundations Designed to Perform

W. M. Lyles Co. provides foundation engineering services backed by decades of heavy civil and water infrastructure construction across California. We’ve built foundations for treatment plants, pump stations, and complex facilities where soil conditions demanded careful engineering and precise execution. That construction background shapes how we approach foundation design—producing solutions that are structurally sound, practically buildable, and reliable for the long term.
